                                                                            UNIDO

United Nations Industrial Organization was established in 1966 and transformed to the specialized agency of the United Nations in 1985. Since then UNIDO has been working with governments, business associations and individual companies to solve industrial problems and equips them to help themselves. UNIDO promotes industrial development for poverty reduction and environmental sustainability. UNIDO has 173 Member States. Recently Mr. Kandeh Yumkellah from Sierra Leone reelected as UNIDO Director- General for next term. As a global forum, UNIDO generates and disseminates knowledge relating to industrial matters and provides a platform for the various actors in the public and private sectors, civil society organizations and the policy- making community in general to enhance cooperation, establish dialogue and develop partnerships. As a technical cooperation agency, UNIDO designs and implements programmes to enhance the productivity of industry in developing and transition economies. UNIDO programmes are focused geographically on least developed countries, agro-based industries and  micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs). (www.unido.org)

The Republic of Tajikistan has become Member State of UNIDO on June 9, 1993. The Europe & Newly Independent States (NIS) Programme is a part of UNIDO's long-term Programme Coordination and along with four other Regional Programmes plays key role in coordination of UNIDO technical cooperation. The Europe & NIS Programme covers 29 countries, including Tajikistan. In 90s at the request of Government of Tajikistan UNIDO has undertaken a programming exercise to assist the country's post-war reconstruction. Current Government's priority is to create favorable conditions for making the economy, including the industrial sector, more efficient and self-sustained.  UNIDO field missions to Tajikistan continues assessment of local needs, selecting those areas which were not covered by assistance from other international donors and ensured support of the UN Resident Coordinator.  UNIDO Regional project initiative on  Investment  Promotion  Platform for Central Asian  and the Caucasus  countries  is proposed  as a pilot  joint  project  in the field  of investment promotion  to cover 8  countries  of Central Asia, including Tajikistan  in cooperation with  European Commission and  TIKA (Turkish International Cooperation  and Development  Agency). Mentioned project for Tajikistan is under phase of endorsement. The project concept's preparation, financial support is sought from the EC for the main phase and is envisaged for 4 years with a total budget of 8, 2 million Euro.      

UNIDO Technical Cooperation Projects for Tajikistan for 2009-2011 includes pipeline projects with a total planned budget of US$ 1,950,000. In 2009- 2010, UNIDO strategy to further technical cooperation  with Tajikistan is in promotion of small and medium  hydropower  stations, water resources, hydroenergy and free economic zones (FEZ). In September 2009 UNIDO is preparing to field a fact - finding mission to Tajikistan. The mission will aim at identifying  concrete  needs, required expertise  and services, scope of a possible intervention, as well as  priority-setting, planning  and  formulating  of  potential  UNIDO's  assistance  to Tajikistan. On July, 2009 long and short term Program of the Government of Tajikistan concerning implementation of medium and small hydro-power projects in the territory of Tajikistan submitted by Permanent Mission to the Secretariat of UNIDO.
